Amongst the hidden treasures of the Amalfi Coast is the Valley of the Mills. Amalfi’s past and present are inextricably linked to this valley and the Canneto River whose cool clean waters course through it. Prehistoric man set up encampments along its banks and hunted and gathered throughout the valley. Agricultural activities flourished and an urban center developed which ultimately became the town of Amalfi, heart of the Amalfi republic, greatest of the four ancient maritime republics.
We will first wander through the dense network of narrow streets and alleys of medieval Amalfi where business is carried on in almost the same way as it was centuries ago, where quiet old churches still offer worshippers comfort and solace.
Then up some steps and the valley opens up in all its verdant splendor. Lemon groves grace its terraced banks, the massive ruins of old paper mills huddle in its depths, venerable trees rise above it shading the lush undergrowth. The hustle and bustle of Amalfi is left behind and suddenly silence reigns to be broken only by birdsong and the gurgling of the stream. This green moist microenvironment is home to rare species of flora including remnants of pre glacial vegetation which, miraculously, have survived the ravages of both man and time.
Of all the Amalfi Coast tours - Valley of the Mills - is perhaps that which best represents the unique blend of culture and nature for which this area is so renowned.
